I Stuck to My Colour Palette for a Year - Here's What I Learnt

That subtitle sounds dramatic, but it’s true! Back in March 2024, I got my colours ‘done’. You’ve seen the trend by now; peeling back the layers of coloured fabric to reveal your most enhancing colour palette (the colours that pair best with your hair, eye colour and overall complexion). You can read about my experience here, but the real juice is in this post. After sticking to my colour palette for the past 15 months, has it changed, well, everything!?

I was assigned ‘True Autumn’ - the palette that suited me best included colours that were deep, rich and muted. As a neutral lover, I was elated.

As someone who, up until that point, had spent their life with a wardrobe that consisted mostly of black and white, my reasons for getting my colours analysed were twofold. I guess my main itch was that I wanted to wear more colour and felt a little bored with what was hanging on my racks. I knew my outfits were lacking in some way and had done all the additional required reading, but I just couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was missing. I also wanted to be pointed in the right direction. When your natural starting point is head-to-toe black, it’s tricky to know where to start, you know!?

Finally, with the knowledge that I was a ‘True Autumn’ in hand, I felt the effects immediately. It created an ‘edit within an edit’. Whilst I already knew what clothing items I was drawn to and which I wasn’t, I could then edit it down further by colour. I immediately swore off buying any new black pieces (and have done a pretty ok-ish job at sticking with that!) and endeavoured to add more colour to my wardrobe. Sourcing pieces that I was actually excited to wear because you know what, they made me look pretty bloomin’ good! Those colour analysis people are onto something! Browns, greens, heck, even reds. Did I… like wearing colour now?!

My Indyx from March 2024 (pre-colour analysis), compared to March this year.

So, 15 months later, what have I learnt? Whilst the initial discovery of finding my best colours was exciting, what came after was far more revealing. Like the one colour I now love more than black (who’d have thought it?!), the two purchases that have done the most heavy lifting in my wardrobe in the past year and the unexpected shifts it’s made in my personal style…
